Heat relief maps available online
by Lita Johnson/Arizona Ecumenical Council
We are in triple digit weather. Survival for those living on the streets, in homes without refrigeration, for the disabled and elderly is at a crisis level. The need for hydration and refuge is immediate. A bottle of water can save a life! Now is the time to organize water drives and continue them throughout the summer!
Here is a website that will be kept current throughout the heat season. http://www.mag.maricopa.gov/display.cms It has two maps on it. One shows water collection sites. The other shows sites that will provide hydration and refuge for the homeless during the day. These are important maps to have as individuals call you or come to your door in need. You can direct them to these locations. Further, you can make donations directly to any of these sites and your donations will be shared appropriately with hydration and refuge sites in the area.
The Arizona Ecumenical Council along with our city and county government offices are asking the faith based community to consider water drives throughout the summer to help replenish these locations. By using the maps, you can find the closest place for you to drop off your donations. We know your time and gas are issues and we are working to make this donation process as simple as possible.
If you have large donations, they can be picked up by contacting Becky Franco at 602-261-8806 or by email to rebecca.franco@phoenix.gov. Further, all area food banks are collecting and storing water for distribution.
Other collection and distribution sites not included on the maps are listed below. You can call them to determine their hours for delivery of donations.
Tempe First United Methodist Church - giving out water, shirts and sunscreen for the homeless
215 E. University Dr.
Tempe, AZ 85282
480-967-3376
Lord of Life Lutheran in Sun City West collects: water, clothing and sanitary supplies for homeless (and distributes them thru Grace Lutheran, downtown Phoenix)
13724 W Meeker Blvd.
Sun City West, AZ 85375-3730
623-584-2000
If you are NOT on the maps and not on this list, but would like to be, please contact me by reply e-mail or by phone to 602-468-3818.
We are also working to create a similar list for areas throughout the state. Please send along any information that would help with this process. We will be sending out regular emails and posting this on our website www.aecunity.net.
