MDGs: The power of ONE

KEARNY - The Rev. Carol Hosler, now serving an ecumenical parish in Kearny, joined with a number of friends last year to create a non-profit called Friends of Women, Environment and Health. The organization supports Women, Environment and Health of Cameroon in West Africa. The president of that non-government organization is Ruth Titi-Manyaka, Carol's college roommate.
The African organization addresses a number of women's issues and has government-assigned oversight of some 500 orphans who reside in the rural villages around Douala. The U.S. non-profit has raised the $12,000 needed to buy a used extended cab 4-wheel drive truck at dealer cost to send to Cameroon so these villages can be reached, even in the monsoon season.
But now the organization needs $5000 for the delivery of the truck from Ohio to Arizona, and for shipping the truck to Africa. Before the truck is picked up in Phoenix for shipping, hopefully in October, the extended cab will be filled with used sewing machines, electricity converters, medical supplies, and gifts for the orphans.
Carol and Barbara Stone of the Church of Our Saviour, Lakeside -- who is also on the organization's board -- plan to spend the month of January in Cameroon, helping with the project there.
Carol said, "Ruth and I saw each other for the first time in 39 years last year. My trip to Cameroon in January will fulfill a promise I made to her 43 years ago to be with her in Africa one day. It is deeply gratifying for me to help her work with AIDS orphans and I am pleased to give others the opportunity to help as well."
